ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The University of Tampa (9-4-1, 3-2-1 SSC) women's soccer team recorded its third shutout in its last four contests with a 1-0 victory at Eckerd College (5-10, 0-6 SSC).
"Eckerd proved to be difficult to break down and we took about an hour to finally score," says head coach Gerry Lucey. "Eckerd was organized defensively and were able to get something in the way of our crosses and shots. Saying that, we also caused ourselves problems by not finishing the numerous chances, corner kicks and crosses. In the end, we were fortunate to score before the game got called. If we want to go deep into post season we need to develop a better mentality and killer instinct in front of goal."
In a game that was called in the 73rd minute due to a campus incident, the Spartans scored the lone goal on a Jazmin Perry score in the 61st minute. The senior was assisted by Charlotte White and Gabby Russo.
The Spartans dominated play, holding a 17-2 advantage in shots, with seven on target while the Tritons had two shots on goal. UT also had seven corner kicks compared to just one by Eckerd. UT played the final 32 minutes with a man-advantage as a Triton was handed a yellow card just before half.
Sophomore goalkeeper Emelie Karstrom tallied her fifth shutout of the season as she finished with a pair of saves.
Freshman Lauren Moore registered four shots to lead all Spartans, while Samantha Kay and Gabby Russo each had three. Each of Russo's shots were on goal to lead the team in that category.
UT will travel to Fort Lauderdale for a Sunday meeting with Nova Southeastern University. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. Live stats will be available through www.tampaspartans.com.
