Alvarez Named SSC Defensive Player of the Week
Senior forward Angela Alvarez was selected as the Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Spartan defense to a pair of victories.
MELBOURNE, Fla. – Senior Angela Alvarez garnered Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors after leading the University of Tampa women's basketball team to a pair of weekend wins. The award is the first for Alvarez and is the first Spartan honoree for the 2015-16 season.
The Boynton Beach, Fla. native was instrumental in dealing the then-No. 4 ranked Drury women's squad its first loss of the season. Tampa limited the Panthers to 61 points, the team's lowest scoring game of the season behind the defensive efforts of Alvarez. The forward spun a double-double effort, notching 11 points and 10 rebounds, with seven defensive boards.
In the team's second win of the tournament, Alvarez totaled 13 rebounds with nine defensive boards, limiting Fort Valley State to 44 points and a meager 27.4% shooting margin from the field.
The accolade marks the first defensive honor for UT in program history, since the awards inception beginning in the 2015-16 season.
The Spartans will return to the court on Saturday, Jan. 2 on the road. Tampa will meet rival Florida Southern College for a 5:30 p.m. start, with live stats and a live video webcast provided through www.tampaspartans.com.
