Spartans Sink Buccaneers for 6th Straight Win
TAMPA, Fla.-The University of Tampa (14-5, 7-2 SSC) women's basketball team dominated Barry University (11-7, 4-5 SSC) by a score of 74-42 on Saturday afternoon in the Bob Martinez Athletics Center.
It did not take long for the Spartans to pull away from the Buccaneers. Tampa's combination of solid defense and shooting 58 percent from the field in the first half had the home team up 47-20 at the break.
Ellen Nurmi led the Spartans with 15 points at halftime, including shooting 3-for-5 from behind the three-point line in the first. Keke Jones also contributed eight points off the bench for the Spartans.
The Spartans continued their dominance in the second half controlling the tempo of the game in their favor. Tampa held Barry to 23 percent shooting from the field and 12 percent from beyond the three-point arc.
Nurmi finished with a career-high 26 points, shooting an efficient 8-for-11 for the game, including five three-pointers for the Spartans. Shamika Williams also helped with 13 points and Jones finished with 10 points.
Tampa will travel to conference foe Rollins this Wednesday in Winter Park, Fla. Rollins leads the all-time series 51-35. The Tars trumped the Spartans 59-58 in their last meeting (1/04/14).
