Spartans Cast Away Pirates
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa women's basketball team took home another home victory with a showing of 61-46 against Armstrong Atlantic State University Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans set out to ensure the tempo of the game adhered to their style of play. They led for the majority of the first half, taking advantage of second chance opportunities and defensively impeding the Pirates.
Taylor McVey ended the first period with nine rebounds and seven points. Ellen Nurmi also chipped in seven points.
Despite the Pirates narrowing the deficit during the second half, the Spartans continued to dominate on the boards, pulling away with about eight minutes left of play.
Shooting 50 percent from the field, McVey finished with a double-double (18 points and 19 rebounds). She is tied with past Spartan standouts Taja Green (2011) and Sheena Walton (2005) for the second most rebounds in a game.
Nurmi and Illyssa Vivo recorded 14 and 13 points respectively, while Keke Jones contributed 10.
Next up, the Spartans will travel to San Francisco, Calif., to participate in the Elsie Darling Classic against Chico State and Sonoma State.
