Spartans Hold Off Rollins to Win Fifth Straight
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa Softball Program fends off late charge from the Tars to win their sixth consecutive series opener in conference play.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Records: Tampa 24-8 (11-5), Rollins 24-13 (12-10)
Location: Naimoli Field | Tampa, Fla.
History: Tonight's meeting was the 128th meeting between the Tars and Spartans, with the Spartans holding a comfortable advantage in the all-time series 74-54.
Final: Tampa 3, Rollins 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Spartans got off to the exact kind of start they were looking for, as they were able to hit the front in the second inning with an RBI single off the bat of Hannah Yetter. Tampa would add to their lead in the fifth inning as they would once again come through with a pair of two out RBI singles from Cam Feast and Kinnah Kreidler to push the advantage to 3-0. At this point a three run lead looked like plenty as Gwen McGinnis had taken a perfect game into the sixth inning, and it looked like a special night could be unfolding. However, the Tars had other plans as they would record three hits in the first four hitters of the inning to put their first run on the board and leave runners on second and third with only one out. Faced with a jam, McGinnis would rebound like she has many times before this season to record the final two outs of the inning without allowing another run to score. After putting up a zero in the bottom of the sixth, Rollins was able to bring the tying run to the plate again in the seventh. This would prove academic as McGinnis would close out the seventh the same way she closed the sixth to end the game and put another notch in the win column for the Spartans.
