Spartans Set for Opening Weekend
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa softball team will start their season off with a four-game weekend series against Lander and Ursuline.
The Matchups, Date/Time:
- Saturday, 12:00 pm (DH): University of Tampa Spartans vs. Lander University Bearcats
- Sunday, 12:00 pm (DH): University of Tampa Spartans vs. Ursuline College Arrows
Location: Naimoli Family Softball Field || Tampa, Fla.
About the Spartans: The Spartans return to action after a strong 2021 season, ending on an eight-game win streak with an 18-4 record. Their success last season placed the Spartans at the top of the leaderboard in the 2022 Sunshine State Conference (SSC) preseason poll, receiving 96 points and six first-place votes. Corynn Miner returns for the 2022 season after being named to the 2021 All-SSC Second Team, D2CCA All-Region Second-Team selection, and being selected as the SSC Pitcher of the Week twice. Also returning this season is 2021 All-SSC First-Team selection Mariah Galhouse and reigning SSC Freshman of the Year Lauren Fantone.
Last Time Out: The last outing for the Spartans at Naimoli Family Softball Field was a doubleheader sweep over Nova Southeastern University Sharks. The win secured the 35th win for the Spartans in the series history with the Sharks.
About the Bearcats: The Bearcats completed their 2021 season with a 16-22 record. Returning for the Bearcats this season are Logan Coward and Bridgett Tierney. Coward hit .322 with six doubles and two home runs in 34 games, Tierney played in 16 games and hit .365 with two doubles, two triples, 17 runs scored, and was 10-10 in stolen bases, respectively. The Bearcats return all five pitchers that saw action in 2021.
Series History with Lander: This weekend will be the first time the two teams will face each other.
About the Arrows: The Arrows closed out the 2021 season with an 11-24 overall record. Kiley Gallagher is returning to the Arrows for her Sophomore season. Last season, Gallagher led the way, hitting .358, recording 19 RBI and three home runs. Also returning is Nicole Rawlings. Last season, Rawlings was 5-4 overall and had a 4.25 ERA in 17 appearances. She had two shutouts, two complete games, and picked up two saves.
Series History with Ursuline: Spartans lead the series 5-0 over the Arrows. The last meeting between the two teams was in February of the 2020 season, with the Spartans defeating the Arrows 2-0.
Tickets: General admission ticket prices for all Tampa regular season athletic events are $10. Youth (ages 12 and under) are admitted for $5. UT students and faculty/staff are admitted free with a valid Spartan ID.
