Dooley Named SSC Pitcher of the Week, Tied for Second-Most in History
The University of Tampa was represented in this week's SSC awards. with Makaleigh Dooley being named Pitcher of the Week.
MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Sunshine State Conference announced its weekly award winners and the University of Tampa's softball team was represented through Makaleigh Dooley, as the senior was named SSC Pitcher of the Week for the fourth time this season.
Dooley earned SSC honors for the 11th time in her career, tied for second-most in SSC Softball history. The senior aided the Spartans in a three-game sweep over Barry University, as the right-hander tossed three complete games and struck out 27 batters in 23 innings. The Wharton HS graduate allowed only one run and one walk in the entire three-game series. She's received the winning decision in the last eight games, including 14 wins during the 18-game winning streak.
The Spartans work-horse leads the SSC in wins (22), strikeouts (176), and walks (13), while she ranks second in innings pitched (180.0) and opponent batting average (.173). Last season, she tied the school record with 25 wins in a season. With at least six games remaining, the 2018 SSC Pitcher of the Year will have the opportunity to break her own record. Dooley's ranked in the top five in almost every pitching category at the University of Tampa; 2nd in wins (69), 3rd in shutouts (23), and 4th in innings pitched (711.1), appearances (128), starts (107), and complete games (77), while she ranks fifth in strikeouts (602).
Tampa's tied the school record for most consecutive wins in a season with their current 18-game winning streak. Following the sweep over Barry, the Spartans moved into first place with an 18-6 record in conference. The Spartans will take the week off and bounce back next weekend, April 18-19, with a home series against Palm Beach Atlantic. UT's regular season schedule ends at Saint Leo on April 25-26. UT has won four games against ranked competition this season; taking the series from No. 10 Florida Tech on March 8-9 and earned victories over then-ranked No. 8 West Chester and No. 22 Valdosta State in the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
