Spartans Split Saturday Doubleheader with Lions
SAINT LEO, Fla. - The University of Tampa
(12-7, 2-4 SSC) softball team split a pair of games with Saint Leo
University (15-6, 2-4 SSC) at University Stadium on Saturday
afternoon.
Jennie Sittloh started game one for the Spartans and was dealt her
second loss of the season.
The Saint Leo offense rallied for 12 runs on 11 hits in the bottom
of the first to open the scoring in game one.
In the bottom of the second the Lions added five runs to extend its
lead to 17-0
UT cut the deficit to 17-2 in the top of the third after
capitalizing off two SLU errors. Taylor Szostak and Kelsey Humphrey
each recorded base hits while coming around to score in the inning.
Szostak was also credited with an RBI in the frame.
Lindsay Dring came around to score in the top of the fourth on an
RBI groundout by Rachael Foote to cut the deficit to 17-3.
The Lions won game one in five innings as a result of the run
rule.
Julia Morrow started game two for the Spartans and earned her ninth
victory of the season. She tossed 7.0 innings with 11 strikeouts
while allowing two runs on three hits.
Saint Leo took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a
sacrifice fly by Angela Kalafas to plate McKenzie Burns.
Morrow and Lions starter Ashley Ehlers dominated in the circle as
both teams were held scoreless through the next three innings.
SLU added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a squeeze bunt
by Brittany Creamer that scored Tiffany Thompson.
The Spartans answered in the top of the sixth by putting together a
two out rally to set the stage for Bre Setree. She blasted a homer
over the left field wall giving UT a 3-2 lead as Meagan Brislin and
Taylor Collins came around to score.
Morrow and the Tampa defense held on for the victory in game two to
split the doubleheader with Saint Leo.
Kandi Kuder and Meagan Burke also contributed to the UT offense
with a base hit each in the game.

Tampa will return to action Tuesday for a doubleheader at home
