Spartans Conclude Busy Weekend With Doubleheader Split
AVE MARIA, Fla. - The No. 14 University of
Tampa softball team (8-3) split a pair of games with Ave Maria
(5-7) at AMU Softball Field on Sunday afternoon by final scores of
10-0 and 14-13 respectively.
Senior Julia Morrow took the circle for the Spartans in game one
and tossed 7.0 shutout innings with 12 strikeouts. She allowed no
runs on five hits and claimed her sixth victory of the year.
Jenna Halper gave Tampa an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second
on a two out RBI double to score Lindsay Dring.
UT's offense exploded in the top of the seventh for nine runs on
eight hits and extended the lead to 10-0. Sahrina Cortes delivered
a clutch bases clearing RBI double while Jennie Sittloh notched a
two RBI single in the inning. Meagan Burke, Laurie Kostecka, and
Korrin Cline each chipped in with an RBI base hit each.
The Gyrenes were unable to mount a comeback in the bottom of the
inning as the Spartans held on for the victory.
Sittloh started game two in the circle for Tampa but moved to third
base as Bre Setree pitched the final 6.0 innings
UT took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI base
hit by Burke to plate Kuder.
Ave Maria scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a
3-0 lead. The Gyrenes capitalized on three walks as Cheyenee Benson
also delivered an RBI base hit in the inning.
The Spartans evened the game in the second as Kuder delivered a two
RBI single that scored Kelsey Humphrey and Alyssa Colletti.
Tampa plated five runs in the top of the fourth to take an 8-3
advantage. The Spartans scored on five consecutive RBI by Kuder,
Cortes, Burke, Setree, and Dring.
Both teams scored runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings with
the Gyrenes taking a 14-13 lead into the seventh. UT was unable to
rally as AMU took the victory in the second game.
Burke had a team-high four hits in game two while Kuder tied her
for a team-leading four RBI. Dring and Colletti also contributed to
the Spartan offense with two base hits each.

Tampa returns to action Friday to open SSC play at home against
