Spartans Slay Lions in SSC Series Opener
SAINT LEO, Fla. - The No. 11 University of Tampa (15-4, 3-1 SSC) softball team claimed a 3-1 victory over Saint Leo University (17-8, 2-2 SSC) Friday evening at University Stadium.
Kayla Cox started in the circle for the Spartans and recorded her 11th victory of the season. The junior tossed 7.0 innings with eight strikeouts while allowing one run on one hit.
Tampa opened the scoring in the top of the third on a bases loaded RBI single by Meagan Burke. Pinch runner Meagan Brislin came around to score and give the Spartans an early 1-0 lead.
Saint Leo responded in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Sarah Steiner. McKenzie Burns scored for the Lions to tie the game at 1-1.
The Spartans reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth on an RBI double by Kayleen Boatwright that scored Brie Walton. Boatwright came around to score on an RBI double by Burke to give Tampa a 3-1 advantage, which would be the final score.
Tampa will conclude the weekend series against Saint Leo with a doubleheader on Saturday with the first game starting at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available through www.tampaspartans.com.
