Tampa Earns Clean Sweep of SSC Softball Awards
ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Tampa's Meagan Burke and Kayla Cox have been named Sunshine State Conference Softball Players of the Week, with Cox recording the honor for the second straight week.
This marks the third time of 2012 that Cox has been tabbed the SSC Pitcher of the Week. Burke has now picked up the honor two times during her freshman season.
Burke, a freshman first baseman from Jacksonville, Fla., batted .600 with six RBI and three runs to lead the No. 8 Spartans to an SSC sweep at Florida Southern. Burke hit safely in all three games of the series and had multiple hits in two outings.
She got on base in 64 percent (.636) of her plate appearances. Burke notched a triple and a home run en route to a 1.100 slugging percentage. In a 2-0 win in the opening game of the series, Burke snapped a 0-0 tie with a two-out triple in the ninth that drove in the eventual game-winning run.
Cox, a sophomore pitcher from Riverview, Fla., set a new school record for consecutive innings without an earned run in her 6-0 complete-game shutout at Florida Southern. In seven innings, Cox permitted three hits and two walks. She struck out 13 Moccasin batters.
Her performance extended her scoreless inning streak to 58.1, surpassing the previous program mark of 57.2, which teammate Deanna Henriott set in 2009.
