No. 12 Tampa Splits Double-Header with No. 4 Barry
MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The No. 12 University of Tampa (29-4, 14-1 SSC) softball team split its Saturday afternoon double-header against No. 4 Barry University (30-8, 11-4 SSC). Tampa was the victor in game one by a score of 2-0, while dropping the second game, 5-3.
Sophomore Kayla Cox tossed a complete game shutout to improve her record to 12-1. In the win, she struck out 12 while allowing only two base hits, and also extended her scoreless innings without an earned run streak to 51.1. She is nearing the program record of 57.2 innings, which was set by teammate Deanna Henriott in 2009.
Stacy Piagno's two-run homer in the first inning was all the Spartans needed on offense. Piagno finished the game with one base hit, two RBI, and one run scored.
Game two was started by Deanna Henriott, whom was also tagged with the loss to drop her record to 16-4. Henriott tossed 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts and gave up five earned runs.
The UT offense was lead by Becky Vyzas and Taylor Storey, as each player collected two base knocks. Meagan Burke, Taylor Collins, and Vyzas each recorded RBI during the game as well. Collins started the first game of her collegiate career at shortstop.
Tampa will head to Lakeland, Fla., next weekend to take on SSC rival Florida Southern College where they will face them in a three-game series. Live stats will be available through tampaspartans.com.
