Deanna Henriott Throws Another Historic Game as No. 21 Tampa Takes Two
CLERMONT, Fla. - Deanna Henriott threw her second career perfect game and eighth no-hitter as the No. 21 University of Tampa (18-3) softball team won a pair of games at the National Training Complex. UT defeated Post University (1-4) and Georgian Court University (5-3) by 4-0 scores.
Henriott, a senior from St. Petersburg, Fla., now has two of the program's three perfect games, as her and Christy Exizian are the lone Spartans to enjoy the accomplishment. It was also the third no-hitter of the season and second in as many weeks for the UT ace. Tampa now has five no-hitters in 2012, as Henriott has tallied three and Kayla Cox two.
The first game of the day was a low-scoring affair as UT scored the first run of the contest due to the base-running of freshman Kayla Lamphier in the top of the sixth inning. After leading off with a base-hit bunt, she advanced to second on a Susan Jallo sacrifice bunt and later took two bases on a wild pitch.
Tampa added three more runs in the seventh as Katlyn Raatz singled home pinch-runner Katie Bannon and Stacy Piagno. Raatz later scored on a wild pitch, making the score 4-0 in favor of the Spartans.
Cox (8-1) continued to dominate as the UT pitcher allowed just one hit while fanning six Eagle hitters. Cox has now thrown 23.1 scoreless innings, dating back to Feb. 25 versus Palm Beach Atlantic.
The Spartan bats started the second game hot, with Jallo sparking the UT offense with a leadoff triple. She scored to give Tampa an early 1-0 lead on a double by freshman Kayleen Boatwright.
Tampa added to its lead in the fifth when Becky Vyzas singled and later scored on one of Georgian Court's six fielding errors in the game.
The Spartans would add two more runs in the following inning as Lamphier and Jallo each scored, making it 4-0 in favor of the Spartans.
Henriott (10-2) also finished with 18 strikeouts, just shy of her school record of 20. Henriott, UT's all-time leader in career strikeouts, now has 928 punchouts as she approaches the 1,000 strikeout milestone.
