Spartan Trio Finds Spot On NFCA All-Region Team
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Coming off a record season, The University of Tampa softball team was represented by three student-athletes on the 2011 NFCA all-South Region team. Deanna Henriott, Susan Jallo and Becky Vyzas were each chosen to the second team.
Henriott, a record-breaking junior pitcher from St. Petersburg, Fla., dominated competition throughout the season with three-no-hitters, including one perfect game to go with new school records in wins, strikeouts, shutouts and ERA. She finished with a 25-4 record and 0.71 ERA along with 281 strikeouts in 198.1 innings of work.
Her resume for this season also includes a first-team all-Sunshine State Conference selection, first-team Daktronics all-South Region selection, three SSC Pitcher of the Week honors and a first-team academic all-district award.
Jallo, a junior third baseman from Dunedin, Fla., hit .320 for head coach Leslie Kanter's squad with team-highs in runs (40), triples (4), sacrifice hits (11) and stolen bases (22). She also finished fourth in UT's single-season records book in stolen bases.
Vyzas, a junior catcher from Tampa, set a school record with nine home runs in 2011. She also led all Spartans with a .353 batting average, 34 RBI, 23 walks and a .442 on-base percentage. Her defensive play was also noteworthy as she notched a .997 fielding percentage with 21 assists and 364 putouts.
