Daktronics Honors UT Duo With All-Region Selections
ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Daktronics announced its 2011 South Region teams for softball, including a pair of University of Tampa student-athletes among its award winners. Deanna Henriott found a spot on the first-team while Becky Vyzas was a second-team selection.
Henriott, a junior pitcher from St. Petersburg, Fla., added to her school records in wins and strikeouts, leading the Spartans in both categories with a 25-5 record to go with 281 punchouts. The first-team all-SSC selection also hurled three no-hitters in 2011 and finished with a 0.71 ERA and 11 shutouts.
Vyzas, a junior catcher from Tampa, led the Spartans at the plate with a .353 average and a school-record nine home runs. The second-team all-SSC selection also drove in a team-leading 34 runs. She also led all UT players with 48 hits, 14 doubles and four triples. She also excelled in the field where she posted a near-perfect .997 fielding percentage with 21 assists and 364 putouts.
The Spartans finished with a 39-9 overall record and earned the program's third NCAA tournament selection in the last four years. UT was also listed as the No. 13 team in the nation in the latest NFCA Coaches Poll, after finishing second in the Sunshine State Conference.
All first-team selections will move on to the national ballot for All-American, which will be selected from the first-team choices from the eight NCAA Division II regions.
Voting was conducted among the sports information directors in the South Region. The entire region nomination and voting procedures are powered by UT partner ATHLETICSITE.COM.
