Tampa Plays To Split With Rollins In Doubleheader
WINTER PARK, Fla. - The No. 12 University of Tampa (30-6, 10-5 SSC) softball team split Sunday's doubleheader against No. 7 Rollins College (34-2, 11-1 SSC). Rollins took the first game of the day by a score of 3-2, but Tampa got revenge in the second game with a 3-1 win in the Sunshine State Conference series.
The first game, as every game of this series, was a heated pitcher's duel. Kari Walsh took the mound for the first game, as she went 4.1 innings allowing two runs on five hits while striking out two. Reliever Deanna Henriott was tagged with the loss. She hurled 1.2 innings allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts.
Tampa had six hits with one each from Julie Wisniewski, Susan Jallo, Becky Vyzas, Brittany Hipple, Cassie Barnes and Brie Walton. The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the first off of consecutive extra base hits by Vyzas and Hipple. Jallo also drove in a run during the fifth by hitting a homerun to deep left field.
Deanna Henriott came out victorious in the second game. She tossed 7.0 innings allowing one run off of five hits while striking out five.
On offense, all of the Spartan runs came off of home runs. Cassie Barnes went deep once, while Katlyn Raatz homered twice. Susan Jallo and Becky Vyzas contributed one hit each. Jallo also stole third during the first inning.
Tampa will take on Barry University for a three game home stand beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. Live stats will also be available through www.tampaspartans.com.
