School Records Fall As UT Takes Pair
CLERMONT, Fla. - The No. 16 University of Tampa (15-1) softball team set the school record for consecutive victories and the best start to a season with a pair of one-run victories at the National Training Complex on Saturday. Tampa defeated Southern New Hampshire (0-1) by a 4-3 score and capped the day with a 3-2 win over Millersville (0-2).
The Spartans have now won 12 consecutive games, breaking the previous school record of 10. At 15-1, Tampa also set a new record for best start in program history, topping the previous best of 14-1 from the 2000 and 2002 seasons.
Against Southern New Hampshire, a Brittany Hipple RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning broke a 3-3 tie as the Spartans walked-off with a victory. Susan Jallo scored the winning run for UT after leading off the frame with a single.
Hipple led Tampa with two hits in game one as Chelsey Brooks also drove in a run. Kari Walsh threw the first 5.0 innings before being relieved by Deanna Henriott for the final 2.0 innings. Henriott improved to 8-0 after throwing 2.0 scoreless innings and striking out three.
UT had seven players with a hit against Millersville with Jallo, Becky Vyzas and Hipple each driving in a run apiece. A 3-0 lead was enough for Henriott, who moved to 9-0 on the year while going the distance for UT. The junior allowed just four hits and struck out nine in 7.0 innings.
Tampa closes out play in Clermont on Sunday in a pair of games at Hancock Park. The Spartans meet Kutztown at 11:30 a.m. followed by a highly anticipated national match versus No. 8 Bloomsburg at 1:30 p.m. Live stats will be available through www.tampaspartans.com.
