Spartans Drop Doubleheader to #10 Rollins
TAMPA, Fla. - No. 10 Rollins College (32-4, 11-1 SSC) solidified its stance at the top of the Sunshine State Conference standings with a doubleheader sweep of The University of Tampa (18-13, 9-6 SSC). After winning game one by a 4-2 score, the Tars were victorious by an 8-0 score in five innings in the second contest.
Each team crossed a run in the first inning to open the doubleheader as UT capitalized on a three-error inning by the Tars. Julie Wisniewski scored the UT run.
The Tars regained the lead with a pair of runs in the third as Tampa threatened in the fourth on an RBI single by Susan Jallo. The sophomore third baseman finished 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and her team leading 13th sacrifice hit of the year.
Heather Van Landingham (10-8) started for the Spartans and went the duration. In 7.0 innings, the senior from Tampa recorded eight strikeouts.
In game two, Rollins freshman pitcher Kirsten Frame threw a no-hitter for the Tars to improve her record to 22-2 on the year.
Kari Walsh (8-6) started for the Spartans and notched six strikeouts while walking none.
Tampa will travel to Barry for a series with the Buccaneers, beginning on Friday. The first game of the series is slated for 6 p.m. followed by a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available through www.tampaspartans.com.
