Spartans Slay Fighting Knights In Walk-off Fashion
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa softball team earned a weekend sweep against Sunshine State Conference opponent Lynn University (15-15, 1-5 SSC) after taking both games in a Saturday double header. With the pair of victories the Spartans advance to 13-9 and 4-2 in conference play.
The latter match came down to the final out as Tampa entered the
seventh inning trailing by three.
The Spartans loaded the bases courtesy of base hits by Brie Walton, Brittany Dattilo and Susan Jallo. Becky Vyzas stunned the Fighting Knights as she sent the Cristie Kaufman offering over the left field fence, giving the Spartans the 5-4 victory.
Jessica Tejas and Brittany Hipple contributed two hits apiece as
Julie Wisniewski contributed a hit and an RBI.
Kari Walsh pitched 7.0 innings for the Spartans while striking out eight and earning her seventh victory.
The first contest rendered a more conventional victory as the Spartans scored a pair in the fifth en route to a 2-0 victory.
The Spartans started off the inning with a single off the bat of Cassie Barnes; she would later score thanks to an error by the third baseman. The Spartans would add the final run later in the frame in the form of a failed pickoff attempt by the catcher, plating Shannon Kelly.
Heather Van Landingham earned her sixth win of the year while striking out six and allowing two hits.
The Spartans are scheduled to travel to Melbourne on Friday as they take on conference opponent Florida Tech. Game time is slated for 2 p.m. Live stats will be available through www.tampaspartans.com.
