Tampa Comes Out Ahead In 15 Inning Pitching Battle
TAMPA, Fla. - Deanna Henriott stayed strong as The University of Tampa (20-5, 7-1 SSC) softball team came out on top in a 1-0 victory over Florida Tech (12-15, 1-6 SSC) that lasted 15 innings. Just the second time in program history that UT has played a 15 inning affair, Henriott struck out a school record 20 batters in the game.
In the bottom of the 15th inning, Michele Horan started the frame with a lead-off single and moved to second on a Kallan Casey base hit. Freshman sensation Becky Vyzas then collected the walk-off hit as she doubled to deep center field.
Vyzas was 4-6 at the plate with the lone RBI as she also received an intentional walk in the 11th inning. Horan also had three hits for the Spartans while Rachel Browning added a pair.
Henriott (13-3) turned in another masterful performance with a 15 inning complete game shutout. Her 20 strikeouts broke her UT school record of 18, which she registered earlier this season versus Armstrong Atlantic. In 15 innings, the sophomore from St. Petersburg allowed just four Panther hits and walked one.
Brianna Barth (5-7) turned in an excellent performance for FIT as she allowed just one run in 14.1 innings of work.
The Spartans host the Panthers in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader, which begins at noon. Tampa will offer live stats through www.tampaspartans.com. Fans may also sign up for eScores, which is a free service that sends text message alerts to fans at the conclusion of UT athletic events.
