Rain Clouds Don’t Douse Spartan Defense
BOCA RATON, Fla. - Despite a half an hour weather delay, The University of Tampa (19-5, 6-2 SSC) softball team defeated Lynn University (10-17, 0-7 SSC) 4-0 today in a Sunshine State Conference game.
Becky Vyzas put the Spartans on the board in the second inning as she took advantage of a wild pitch by the Fighting Knights pitcher Amber Havnar. Tampa then scored two more runs in the fifth as Cassie Barnes advanced home on an error and Ashley Arcuri scored off of another wild pitch by Havnar. Arcuri scored the final run of the game in the seventh inning after teammate Michelle Horan doubled.
Deanna Henriott pitched a strong game for the Spartans keeping the Fighting Knights to only two hits all game and throwing six strikeouts. Her pitching combined with the support of the outstanding defense allowed for seven errorless innings.
The same two teams are back in action on Saturday in a 1 p.m., doubleheader. Tampa will offer live stats through www.tampaspartans.com. Fans may also sign up for eScores, which is a free service that sends text message alerts to fans at the conclusion of UT athletic events.
