FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The 19th-ranked University of Tampa softball team split a doubleheader against Nova Southeastern as the Spartans took game one by a 6-2 score and then dropped the second game 7-2. UT is now 23-7 on the year while NSU is 30-11.
In game one, the score was tied at 2-2 until UT scored four runs in the final three innings to secure the win. A two-run seventh for Tampa put the game further out of reach as Heather VanLandingham took the victory.
VanLandingham improved to 7-2 on the year while registering 11 strikeouts in seven innings. At the plate, Samantha Becker was 2-4 with three RBI's while Jessica Tejas smacked her team leading fourth home run in the second inning.
Nova scored three runs in both the third and fifth innings of game two as it recorded the victory in the rubber game of the series. After throwing 14 innings on Thursday night, Deanna Henriott got the start and went 4.1 innings for UT. VanLandingham then entered in relief and threw a hitless 1.2 innings.
Ashley Arcuri had a pair of hits to go with an RBI in game two, while Krystal Crooks, Jessica Keefe and Brandi Blout each had a hit.
The Spartans continue Sunshine State Conference play on Friday as it hosts Lynn at 7 p.m. Wednesday's previously scheduled game with Missouri-St. Louis has been cancelled.
