Tampa Falls to Florida Southern in Extra Innings
LAKELAND, Fla. - The University of Tampa softball team was taken to extra innings by Florida Southern, falling to the Mocs in the 8th inning by a 2-1 score in the first game of a three game series. Tampa drops to 13-5 on the season and 0-1 for Sunshine State Conference play, as Florida Southern improves to an 8-1 overall mark, and 1-0 for SSC play.
The game was very well defended by both teams, with the Mocs
taking a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI single by Michelle
Tatlock. Southern held the lead until the top of the sixth inning,
when Tampa's Samantha Becker singled home pinch-runner Ashley
Carrea to tie the game at 1-1.
The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 into the bottom of the eighth
when Florida Southern's Natalie Lang laid down a bunt with no outs
and runners on first and second. Lang's bunt rolled through the
vacated shortstop position, allowing pinch-runner Amanda Kaiser to
come around from second to score the game-winning run.
The Spartans are back in action tomorrow in Lakeland for the
conclusion of the series with Florida Southern. The first game of
the doubleheader is set to start at 1 pm.
