CLEARWATER, Fla. - The University of Tampa softball team enjoyed a strong finish to the 2008 Eckerd Tournament as it posted three wins in the final day. After defeating Palm Beach Atlantic 5-4, the Spartans then won 3-0 over #17 Midwestern State and capped the perfect day with a 6-3 victory over Saint Leo. The Spartans are now 13-4 on the year.
Against Palm Beach Atlantic, Krystal Crooks was 3-4 with a pair of RBI's while freshman pitcher Deanna Henriott pitched a complete game while striking out nine Sailfish. Ashley Arcuri and Samantha Becker each collected a pair of hits in the game.
Heather VanLandingham and Deanna Henriott combined for the shutout of Midwestern State as VanLandingham went five innings for the victory while Henriott earned her second save of the year in relief.
The finale was a key victory over Sunshine State Conference and South Region rival Saint Leo as a four run third inning sealed the UT triumph. Freshman Cassie Barnes was 2-4 at the plate with two RBI's while Arcuri, Michele Horan and Crooks had two hits apiece. Henriott started and went the distance while improving to 8-2 on the year.
Tampa returns to the field in Lakeland on Friday as it begins SSC play with a three game series against Florida Southern. Game time is 7 p.m.
