Pair of Shutouts Lead Spartans to Doubleheader Sweep

TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa softball team evened its record at .500 following a pair of five-inning victories over Ohio Valley University (W.V.). The Spartans won game one by a score of 9-0 and answered with an 8-0 victory. UT is now 10-10 on the season as OVU drops to 0-4.
In game one, Michele Horan and Krystal Crooks each tied the UT school record with two triples. Horan was a perfect 3-3 with two runs scored while Crooks was also 3-3 with four RBI. Samantha Becker also drove in two runs on a pair of doubles.
Devlin Dougherty started for the Spartans and went the distance, allowing just two hits. She also struck out eight while walking none.
After failing to score in the first two innings of the second game, the Spartans put a run on the board in the third and followed with three in the fourth and four in the fifth to end the game. Horan, Kallan Casey and Brandi Blout each had two hits apiece with Casey driving in three runs.
Heather Van Landingham earned the shutout while giving up just one hit. She also struck out 10 Fighting Scots while walking one for the victory.
The Spartans will return to action on Friday when they host Salem International at 6 p.m.
