Spartans Earn Spot In Preseason South Region Polls
NEW ORLEANS - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its preseason regional cross country rankings in NCAA Division II. Placed in order by a representative in each region, regional rankings are a reflection of a team's strengths entering the year based on returning and new runners on each squad.
The University of Tampa was tabbed fist in the women's side as the men were chosen fourth. The Spartan women are looking for their fourth consecutive NCAA South Region title as head coach Jarrett Slaven's squad finished 10th at the NCAA Championships last season.
On the women's side, Tampa returns Jess Butler, who is a two-time all-South Region performer. SSC Freshman of the Year Kaia Hampton also returns along with all-South Region runner Heather Nicolosi.
Tampa's men finished eighth at the 2009 NCAA South Regional, and will receive a boost with the return of seniors Tony Nicolosi and Jeremy Lautzenheiser. Both redshirted in 2009 and will team with a you8ng group of returnees.
UT opens its 2010 season on Fri., Sept. 3 at the Early Bird Classic. The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Dover Trails.
