Ingvarsson’s Goal Lifts No. 1 Tampa To Victory
TAMPA, Fla. - A penalty kick goal from junior defender Dan Ingvarsson in the 53rd minute carried the No. 1 University of Tampa Spartans (2-0) men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Clayton State University (2-1).
The Spartans were awarded the shot after the Lakers' goalkeeper David Cristofoli took down Lister Warren inside the box for a yellow card. The goal was Ingvarsson's first of the year after connecting on four penalty kicks in the 2008 season and stood as the lone goal of the match.
"I thought our commitment to defending tonight was spectacular," Tampa head coach Adrian Bush said. "It was a great win against a very, very good team who we think will be there in the end."
The Lakers managed just one shot on goal in the match against a tough Spartan backline which resulted in a save for senior Ryan Thompson who notched his first shutout of the season.
Sophomores Ryan Griffin and Karl Swan controlled much of the play in the middle as Ingvarasson's goal was enough to take the victory.
Bush continued, "We still have to get better at managing at the end, but it was a great result. Now we go up against a very good team in North Georgia who beat another team in our conference tonight."
"We'll be ready to play."
The Spartans travel to North Georgia for a Sunday evening game at 6:00 pm. Livestats will be available through www.tampaspartans.com. Fans can also sign up for escores to receive the result at the conclusion of the match.
