HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
The game opened at a rapid pace as Tampa struck first with a Camden McCormick layup followed by a Ryan Blount three-pointer. The opening minutes featured back-and-forth action, with a Kyler Lamb dunk helping keep the Spartans rolling offensively.
Mateusz Szpin provided an immediate spark off the bench, scoring on two layups, converting at the free-throw line, and throwing down a momentum-shifting dunk to close the half. B.J. Schaeffer added to the scoring with finishes in the paint, including one off a turnover, as Blount controlled the tempo on both ends of the floor. Behind aggressive defense, forced turnovers, and transition scoring, Tampa took a 50–40 lead into the break.
Second Half
Both teams opened the second half trading three-pointers as Saint Leo looked to cut into the deficit. The Lions continued to chip away, but Trey Lane answered by capitalizing in transition, scoring both in the paint and from beyond the arc to keep Tampa in control.
The Spartans found consistent success inside, scoring over half of their points in the paint, while forcing turnovers that led to 22 points—nine more than Saint Leo. Blount continued his offensive surge, finishing with 33 points to tie his career high. With three starters dealing with foul trouble, Tampa's bench stepped up in a big way, contributing 33 points and helping the Spartans secure key defensive stops down the stretch to seal the eight-point win.
