ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The University of Tampa (10-4, 3-2 SSC) men's basketball team defeated Eckerd College (9-6, 2-2 SSC) 64-49 Wednesday night on the road.
The Spartans hit the court with a huge chip on their shoulder as coach Richard Schmidt was looking for his 600th program win; a milestone not many coaches possess overall.
Eckerd scored the first eight points of the game, simply outrunning Tampa. After remaining within a point of the Tritons for the first stint of the half, the Spartans began to find their offensive rhythm. Spartans ended the half up by three, giving them a slight edge as the team is 6-2 when leading at the half.
The Spartans faced several traps, along with foul trouble in the second half. The team however was still in control holding the Tritons to 25 percent shooting from the field. Tampa led by as many as 15 shooting 49 percent from the field and 57 percent from three-point range.
Da'Markco Foster led all scorers with 15 points shooting a perfect 3-of-3 three-point field goals. Ryan Kidd and Matt Johnson added 10 points apiece. Kidd led all rebounders with eight.
Eckerd College was also the grounds where coach Schmidt picked up his 600th career win back in 2011, where he became the fourth active NCAA Division II coach and 12th overall to reach 600 victories.
Tampa will take on Lynn University Saturday afternoon. The Spartans trail the all-time series 15-20.
Tickets are available at the gate for $5. Children 12-and-under will be admitted free. UT faculty, staff and students are admitted free when displaying a valid Spartan ID card.
