Mocs Takes Series Opener in Front of Record Crowd
TAMPA, Fla. — The No. 2 University of Tampa baseball team dropped a tightly contested 3–1 decision to Sunshine State Conference rival Florida Southern on Friday night at Tampa Baseball Field.
The loss moved the Spartans to 26–5 overall and 12–1 in SSC play in front of a capacity Alumni Night crowd of 1,172 fans, as Tampa honored the 20th anniversary of the 2006 national championship team prior to first pitch.
Despite the setback, Tampa now holds a 114–113 all‑time series advantage over the Moccasins in one of the most historic rivalries in Division II baseball.
How It Happened
The game quickly settled into a pitchers' duel, with both teams held scoreless through the first four innings. Florida Southern broke through in the fifth, using a sacrifice fly by Brady Doorey and an RBI single from Ryan Jenkins to grab a 2–0 lead.
Tampa answered in the bottom of the inning. Walker Vanecek reached base and eventually scored on a Jordan Evans sacrifice fly, cutting the margin to 2–1 and energizing the crowd.
From there, pitching took over. Florida Southern starter Sachem Ramos worked out of multiple jams, and Tampa ace Robert Satin matched him pitch for pitch, keeping the Spartans within striking distance.
Florida Southern added an insurance run in the ninth when Eli Thurmond singled up the middle to score a pinch runner, extending the lead back to two. Tampa brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth but was unable to break through.
Overall, the Spartans had their opportunities, leaving 12 runners on base. Tampa was just 1-of-10 (.100) with runners in scoring position and 0-for-5 with the bases loaded.
