Spartans Drop Series Opener With Hurricanes
AMERICUS, Ga. — The No. 1 University of Tampa baseball team dropped a tight 2–1 pitcher's duel to Georgia Southwestern on Friday night at Hurricane Stadium.
The Spartans fell to 15–2 after being limited to four hits by Hurricanes starter Evan Koehler, who recorded 15 strikeouts in a complete‑game effort. Tampa tied the game in the sixth on a Brayden Woodburn RBI single, but Georgia Southwestern answered in the eighth and held on to hand the Spartans their first loss in eight days. Despite the defeat, Tampa received another strong outing from ace Robert Satin, who allowed just one run and struck out nine across seven innings.
How It Happened
The game opened as a battle of elite starting pitching, with Satin and Koehler matching zeroes through the first two innings. Georgia Southwestern struck first in the third when Jacob Reeves delivered a solo home run to left, putting the Hurricanes ahead 1–0. Tampa struggled to generate offense early, managing only one hit through the first five frames.
The Spartans finally broke through in the sixth. Jesse Ponce lined a single to center, and after advancing to second on a groundout, Brayden Woodburn shot an RBI single through the right side to tie the game at 1–1. Woodburn was later caught stealing, and Koehler escaped the inning without further damage.
Satin continued his dominant outing into the late innings, striking out nine and allowing just five hits across seven complete frames. But in the eighth, Georgia Southwestern reclaimed the lead when Evan Wainman singled to the right side, scoring Drake Harman from third to make it 2–1. The Hurricanes loaded the bases later in the inning, but reliever Sammy Beir induced a strikeout to keep Tampa within reach.
Koehler, however, proved too much. He struck out the side in the ninth, sealing the complete‑game victory and halting Tampa's winning momentum.
