Satin, Beir Combine for Shutout as Spartans Open SSC Road Play With Win
BOCA RATON, Fla. - The No. 1 University of Tampa baseball team opened its Sunshine State Conference road slate with a dominant 6–0 shutout over Lynn on Friday afternoon in Boca Raton. Behind another stellar start from Robert Satin and an overpowering relief effort from Sam Beir, the Spartans improved to 12–1 overall and 4–0 in SSC play, extending their conference-winning streak with a complete performance on both sides of the ball. Tampa produced ten hits, executed in key moments, and never allowed a Lynn runner to score in the nine‑inning victory.
Game Recap
Tampa struck first in the second inning, using three consecutive hits to jump ahead. After Walker Vanecek and Gunnett Carlson reached on back‑to‑back singles, Javi Soto lined an RBI single to right‑center to score Vanecek and give the Spartans a 1–0 lead. Satin handled the early frames with ease, retiring nine of the first ten hitters he faced and keeping the Knights off balance with a mix of ground‑ball outs and well‑spotted fastballs.
In the fourth, the Spartans manufactured another run. Vanecek and Carlson opened the inning with a walk and another walk, and Soto dropped down a bunt single to load the bases. Jack Martinez then delivered a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Vanecek for a 2–0 advantage. Satin continued to cruise, scattering just five hits through 6.1 innings while striking out four without issuing a walk. His efficiency allowed Tampa to control the pace of play from the outset.
Tampa created separation in the seventh by capitalizing on a pair of hit‑by‑pitches. Brayden Woodburn and Jordan Evans were both plunked to begin the frame, and Jake Books shot a clean RBI single up the middle to score Woodburn. Moments later, Jhoander Irigoyen lifted a sacrifice fly to right to bring home Evans, stretching the lead to 4–0.
The Spartans added two insurance runs in the ninth. Jesse Ponce was hit by a pitch, advanced twice on wild pitches, and ultimately scored on another to make it 5–0. Evans then walked, stole second, and raced home on Irigoyen's sharply hit RBI single up the middle. Beir closed out the final 2.2 innings, allowing no hits and striking out five to lock down Tampa's second shutout in four games.
