Spartans Complete Sweep of Post Behind Dominant Pitching
TAMPA, Fla. - The top‑ranked University of Tampa baseball team complete the weekend sweep over Post in a great all-around performance.
B.J. Bailey got the start in Sunday's matinee matchup for the Spartans and delivered a quick 1-2-3 first inning including back-to-back strikeouts to start the game. Bailey would only build on this start and create a masterpiece of a start. Over 6 innings of work, Bailey struck out 5 while only allowing 2 baserunners. Bailey only needed 66 pitches to finish out his day, bringing his ERA down to 0.60 for the season.
The scoring started for the Spartans in the second inning wi th an RBI double from Gunnett Carlson followed immediately by an RBI single from Javi Soto. The Spartans would start to pull away from the Eagles in the sixth inning with the help of patient hitting. The Spartans would work 6 free passes in the frame with the only hit being a 2-run single from Jhoander Irigoyen that came with the bases loaded. The Spartans would plate 5 runs in the sixth inning with only 1 hit extending their lead to 7-0 and providing plenty of breathing space between them and the Eagles.
Tampa was not done with scoring though, they would go on to add two more runs with one coming in the 7th courtesy of a Jake Brooks solo home run (his first as a Spartan), and Brayden Woodburn scampering home off of a pop-up to second base.
As for the rest of the pitching, Alex Laiche and Oscar Hernandez would combine for the final 3.0 IP and allow only 1 baserunner each while striking out a combined 7 Eagles. Bailey would record the win improving his record to (2-0).
Irigoyen's single extends his recent hot streak at the plate to 5 consecutive multi-RBI games and a 5 game hit streak (4 out of 5 being multi-hit games). He finishes the series against Post hitting .800 (8/10) with 2 HR and 9 RBI. Woodburn extends his hitting streak to 8 games, having recorded a hit in each Spartan contest so far this season. Two other Spartans have hit streaks going strong as well, Soto (7 games) and Walker Vanecek (6 games).
