Balanced Attack Leads Spartans Past Montevallo
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa baseball team remained unbeaten on the season with a decisive 9–1 victory over Montevallo on Saturday afternoon at the UT Baseball Field. The Spartans, now 4–0, combined dominant pitching with a 16‑hit offensive effort to control the game from start to finish.
Tampa struck early when Jordan Evans opened the bottom of the first inning with a triple, later scoring on a groundout by Jesse Ponce to give the Spartans a quick 1–0 lead. Evans' early spark set the tone for what would become a multi‑hit performance from the senior outfielder.
Tampa's offense broke through again in the fourth inning as Jhoander Irigoyen delivered one of the game's biggest swings, a two‑run home run to left field, scoring Walker Vanecek. The long ball, Irigoyen's first of the season, extended the Spartans' lead to 3–0.
Montevallo managed to plate its only run of the afternoon in the top of the fifth, but the momentum swung sharply back to Tampa in the bottom half of the frame. The Spartans erupted for five runs on six hits in the inning. Ponce doubled deep to center field to score Evans, Brayden Woodburn added an RBI single, Jake Books lifted a sacrifice fly, and Gunnett Carlson capped the inning with a two‑run single to right‑center.
By the end of the fifth, Tampa had surged ahead 9–1 and firmly taken control of the game.
Tampa continued to apply pressure in the sixth inning when Books singled up the middle to score Ponce, providing further insurance as the Spartans pushed the margin into double digits on the in‑game scoreboard. Though later scoring adjustments recorded the official final as 9–1, Tampa's offensive rhythm remained consistent throughout the contest, with contributions coming from all parts of the lineup.
The Spartans finished with 16 hits, led by multi‑hit games from Evans (3‑for‑5), Soto (3‑for‑4), Irigoyen (2‑for‑4), Carlson (2‑for‑4), Woodburn (2‑for‑4), and Ponce, who reached base four times. Tampa also showcased its speed, recording four stolen bases while maintaining pressure on Montevallo's defense.
On the mound, Tampa's pitching staff delivered a commanding performance, allowing just three hits across nine innings. John Luke Glanton improved to 2–0, working 4.2 innings while giving up only two hits and one run.
Sammy Beir followed with 3.1 dominant innings, striking out four and allowing just a single hit to stabilize the game and shut down any chance of a Montevallo rally. Cade Drohan closed out the ninth with authority, striking out all three batters he faced to slam the door. Combined, the trio tallied 10 strikeouts and did not allow an earned run after the fifth inning. Tampa's defense was equally sharp, playing error‑free baseball while turning multiple double plays to squash Montevallo's limited scoring chances.
