Day One in the Books at AVCA Championships
TAVARES, Fla. - Tampa off to a good start on day one at the championships.
The University of Tampa beach volleyball team starts pool play unbeaten on day one. Tampa's first match came against Carson-Newman who's seeded ninth at the tournament. Leading UT in the 1's pairing was Olivia Margolies and Payton Brunick. The pair started off strong winning the first set 21-11 but did not finish the match due to Tampa having clinched the duel. Tampa's arguably most consistent pairing is in the 2's with Madison Brunick and Keely Hamilton. The pairing won the first set convincingly, 21-13 and came out on top in the second set 21-17. Nevaeh Wolfe and Hailey Wolfe won in straight sets 21-14 and 21-15 in the 3's. Cassidy Ehrie and Angel Williams won the first set in the 4's 21-13 and would be tied at 17 in the second set before the match was called. In the 5's, Anna Bayes and Hailey Peterson would finish their match with a win in straight sets. Bayes and Peterson won the first set with ease, 21-7 and would cap off the second set with a 21-10 victory. Tampa defeated Carson-Newman, 3-0 to take its first duel of the day.
Tampa would extend its streak to 14 after a 3-0 duel win over sixteenth seed McKendree. Margolies and Brunick won a close first set 21-19 and led 11-10 in the second before the match came to a halt. Hamilton and Brunick absolutely dominated their match with a first set win, 21-5 and a second set win, 21-9. The Wolfe's won their second match of the day after sweping their pairing, 21-11, 21-7. Ehrie and Williams were unable to complete a match today but won the first set in their match convincingly 21-13, and were leading the second set by a large margin. Bayes and Peterson once again competed in the 5's and won with ease, 21-3, 21-10.
Lauren Duke, Meghan Schreck, Ashley Brin, Brooke Green, Sammie Ostrander and Brooke Dow competed in the pairs championship challenge and were winners.
