Tampa Tops Saint Leo in Shutout FashionFebruary 28, 2014
TAMPA, Fla.—The No. 21 University of Tampa softball team defeated Saint Leo University by a score of 2-0 on Friday night at Naimoli Family Field. The Spartans improve to 8-3, 2-2 in the Sunshine State Conference, while the Lions drop to 10-8 with a 0-1 conference standing.
Standout Lindsay Dring went 2-for-3 in the match up with two doubles and an RBI to put the Spartans on the board. Pitcher Kayla Cox notched her third win for the season tossing nine strikeouts with a mere three hits.
Offense was scarce throughout the first three innings for both the Spartans and Lions. Bre Setree sparked the Spartans’ momentum in the fourth with a double to left center. Pinch runner Meagan Brislin was brought home off a double by Dring, putting Tampa up by one.
Back-to-back errors by the Lions loaded the bases in the fifth inning. Meagan Burke drew a walk to bring home Jenna Halper for the second Spartan run.
In the final inning of play, Saint Leo showed some life with pinch runner Jessica LoBiano and center fielder Chelsey Steedly on second and third with two outs. Quick defense by shortstop Kayleen Boatright ended the inning to secure Tampa’s victory.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday afternoon to continue today’s matchup with a doubleheader against Saint Leo beginning at 1 p.m. at the Naimoli Family Field in Tampa, Fla.
