No. 7 Tampa Splits Pair of Non-Conference GamesFebruary 25, 2014
CLERMONT, Fla. – The No. 7 University of Tampa (7-3) softball team split a pair of games at the National Training Complex, falling 3-1 to Davenport University (6-0) and defeating the University of Michigan at Dearborn (0-1) by a score of 8-0.
In game one, Davenport’s bats came to life later in the contest as they broke a 1-1 tie with a pair of sixth inning runs. Meagan Burke, Alyssa Colletti and Jenna Halper each had a hit for Tampa’s offense.
Kayla Cox (2-2) tossed a complete game for the Spartans, finishing with six strikeouts.
Tampa struck for an early run in the game against Michigan-Dearborn as they loaded the bases and scored a run on a Lindsay Dring single to left field. The Spartans would then add a pair in the second to extend the lead to 3-0 as Halper led off the frame with a double and later scored. Taylor Collins, who reached on an error during a sacrifice bunt, would steal second, and come home on a wild pitch for the second run of the inning.
The Spartans extended their lead to 5-0 with a pair in the top of the third inning. Halper tripled to right-center, scoring Kelsey Humphrey after the freshman reached via a pinch hit walk. Halper would later score on a Taylor Collins sacrifice fly.
The score became 8-0 in favor of Tampa with a pair of fourth inning runs. Kandi Kuder led off the inning with a single, and stole second before scoring on an RBI single by Burke. The Spartans would then load the bases as pinch hitter Karlyn Buker drove home the second run of the inning.
Kuder, Burke, Setree and Halper each had two hits in game two as a total of seven Spartans accounted for 11 team hits.
Julia Morrow (5-1) was nearly unhittable, fanning seven Wolverines while allowing just one hit through the first three innings. Morrow would finish with her second shutout of the season. She struck out 11 UMD hitters while allowing just one hit in 5.0 innings of work.
Tampa returns to action on Friday in its Sunshine State Conference home opener as it welcomes Saint Leo University. Friday’s 6 p.m., game will be followed by a 1 p.m., Saturday doubleheader at the Naimoli Family Softball Field.
