Offensive Attack leads Spartans Past IndiansFebruary 23, 2014
SALISBURY, N.C. – The University of Tampa men’s lacrosse team had seven players tally at least one point as the Spartans defeated Catawba 11-5 Sunday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. With the win the Spartans improve to 3-0 overall, while the Indians fall to 0-2 overall.
The Spartans struck first as Justin Fitzpatrick scored an unassisted goal six minutes into the contest. Several minutes later Conor Whipple connected with Jake Rooney for a goal to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead. The Indians responded as John Scheich found Daniel Rew for a goal to cut the lead to 2-1 after the opening period.
Trevor Calleja won the starting faceoff, picked up the ground ball, and found Whipple for a goal eight second into the second quarter. Minutes later Rooney put another shot into the back of the cage to extend the Spartans lead to 4-0. Tampa then took advantage of a Catawba penalty as Mike Morris netted a man-up goal to give the Spartans a 5-1 lead with 12:31 left in the first half. The two teams traded possessions but neither would convert a goal as the score remained 5-1 at the break.
Tampa’s offensive attack continued in the third quarter Morris scored an unassisted goal on the Spartans first possession of the half. Minutes later Tyler Ulrich netted a goal for Catawba to cut the lead to 6-2. Tampa won the ensuing possession and Kyle Hemrick made a dodge towards the cage and put a well-placed shot past the goalie to give the Spartans a 7-2 lead with 10:35 remaining. The score would remain that way until the 1:06 mark when Whipple netted an unassisted goal for the Spartans. Catawba had one more chance to score but Andrew Failla made a great save on a Trevor Sierarcki shot to keep the score 8-2 after the third quarter.
Just over four minutes into the fourth quarter Whipple netted his third goal of the game to extend Tampa’s lead to 9-2. Minutes later Rooney found Nick Ferreiro for a goal. After a Catawba goal, Fitzpatrick picked up the ground ball off the ensuing faceoff, drove the field, and scored to extend the Spartans lead to 11-3. Catawba scored twice more for the 11-5 final.
Whipple led the Spartans with three goals and an assist. He has scored in hat trick in all three of the Spartans games this season. Rooney tallied two goals and an assist, while Morris and Fitzpatrick each netted a pair of goals. Calleja and Matt Bilak tied for the team lead with four ground balls apiece.
Failla made 10 saves in the contest and improved his record to 3-0 on the season. Shane Giunta made three saves in four minutes in the cage.
