Spartans Fall to No.9 Chico StateNovember 23, 2013
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The University of Tampa (3-2) women’s basketball team fell 77-67 to No. 9 Chico State (4-0) in their final game of the Elsie Darling Classic.
Ellen Nurmi hit a three point basket to get things going for the Spartans within the first few seconds of play. Unfortunately the team was subject to two scoring droughts in the first half as a result of being held to 30 percent shooting from the field.
The Spartans did receive a mini spark from the bench, as Angela Alvarez contributed six points in nine minutes. Illyssa Vivo and Juliana Cavallaro also had six points apiece at the end of the first period.
The second half was much better for the Spartans. They had several clutch three point baskets and shot 50 percent from three point range for the game. Tampa managed to get several stops down the stretch against the Wildcats, however it was not enough as they shot 50 percent from the field.
Cavallaro and Vivo led the Spartans with 17 points apiece. Keke Jones and Alvarez recorded nine points, while Nurmi registered eight.
Spartans will take on Palm Beach Atlantic on the road next weekend. Tampa is 14-1 all-time against the Sailfish.
