Spartan Tennis Makes History at Fall TournamentOctober 11, 2012
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa tennis team is back in Tampa after making history at the Georgia College Women’s Fall Championships over the weekend.
Coach Al DuFaux’s team has accomplished a feat that has never happened in the tournament’s history. Competing in all five divisions, the Spartan tennis team would go on and win every division. This marks the first time in the tournament's history dating back to 1990 that a team has won every division.
“We played great this weekend. I am very proud of them, there are some areas to improve on but we are getting there. We have worked very hard this fall and it will only get harder, but they can see it is paying off” says DuFaux.
This marks the 12th year of the Georgia College tournament while each year the competition has increased. Teams competing in this year’s tournament were Georgia College, Florida Tech, Lander University, and UNC-Pembroke. At the end of the 2012 season, Florida Tech was ranked at No. 17 while Georgia College finished at No. 20.
The Spartans competed in all five divisions of the tournament. Competing in the “A” division for singles was sophomore Thashia Garcia, and junior Julia Baltas. Garcia would go on to win the division over Kay Barksdale of Georgia College by a score of 6-2, 6-1. This marks the second year running that Garcia has won the signles “A” division at the tournament. Baltas fell to Barksdale in the semifinal by a score of 7-5, 6-2.
The “B” division, saw four Spartans take the court. Freshman Lindsay Nochowicz, sophomore Kelsey Matthews, sophomore Meg Wladimirski, and junior Lauren Hewett would battle it out. Dominating the field of play, Hewett was the lone Spartan to fall during quarterfinal play while the remaining three would advance. The final match saw Wladimirski battle her way to victory over teammate Nochowicz 6-2, 6-3, while Hewett would go on to win consolation.
For the doubles “A” division, the top ranked Tampa duo Hewett and Wladamirski would run thru the field of play while winning the final match by a commanding 8-3 victory over Barksdale and Krupp of Georgia College.
In the doubles “B” division the Spartans would send three teams to play. Mathews and Nochowicz came out victorious 8-6 in the final round over teammates Baltas and Garcia after a hard fought battle.
“The past few weeks coach has been drilling our team at the net, and this weekend we really saw an improvement in our game overall and as a team it has made us much stronger, especially in doubles,” said team captain Hewett.
