Tampa Volleyball Set For Meeting With SSC Rival to Begin Homestand

TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 7 University of Tampa volleyball team will play the first game inside the newly re-dedicated Bob Martinez Athletics Center in its 2012 home opener.

The Spartans will meet long-time Sunshine State Conference rival Florida Southern College on Friday at 7 p.m. The match will mark the first of two on the weekend as UT will also host Saint Leo on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Tampa enters the match with a 9-2 overall record, including a 2-0 showing in Sunshine State Conference play. Winners of three straight, UT has a pair of road victories over Rollins and Florida Tech on its record.

Reigning SSC and South Region Player of the Year Danielle Selkridge leads Tampa with 127 kills to go with a .412 hitting percentage and 49 blocks, all team highs. Kahley Patrick has 433 assists as Jessica Yingling is second on the team in kills (122) and first in digs (124).

The Moccasins have won nine straight matches and stand at 10-4 on the year and 2-0 in SSC play. FSC has defeated Lynn and Barry in league play. Kate Stromberg has 162 kills and 157 digs to lead the Mocs.

Saint Leo is 6-4 on the year and looking for its first SSC victory after setbacks against Barry and Lynn. The Lions have dropped four of their past five matches.

UT holds a 60-56 edge in the all-time series with Florida Southern and are winners of eight straight matches over the Mocs. Tampa is 62-1 versus Saint Leo as the Spartans have taken the last six over the Lions following a regular season loss in 2009 at UT.

Tickets are available at the gate for $5. Children 12-and-under will be admitted free. UT faculty, staff and students are admitted free when displaying a valid Spartan ID card.
