UT Shows Up at No. 17 in Directors' Cup Winter StandingsMarch 16, 2012
CLEVELAND – The University of Tampa athletics program is ranked No. in the current Learfield Directors’ Cup standings, as announced by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) in its initial winter rankings.
Adams State (Colo.) sits atop the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings with 420.50 total points. With second place finishes in both men’s and women’s track & field and an eighth place finish in wrestling, the Grizzlies added 250.50 points to their fall total.
Tampa has 224 total points, after finishing third in women’s volleyball, fifth in women’s soccer, 16th in women’s cross country and 24th in men’s cross country. UT captured NCAA South Region titles from three of its five fall teams, with women’s cross country, women’s soccer and volleyball each finishing as the top teams in the NCAA South Region.
The Spartans will earn points from men’s and women’s swimming that will be included in the final winter standings as the championships are currently taking place.
Three of the seven winter NCAA championships have been completed with the following institutions capturing titles: women’s track & field – Grand Valley State (Mich.); men’s track & field – Grand Canyon (Ariz.); wrestling – Nebraska Kearney.
The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports -- seven women’s and seven men’s.
The final Division II winter standings will be released March 29.
