Tampa Slotted as Nation's Top Team in New Poll

TAMPA, Fla. – Fresh off an opening series sweep over Bentley University, the University of Tampa baseball team is the No. 1 team in the nation according to College Baseball Lineup.

The Spartans edged preseason favorite Francis Marion, who dropped to the second spot. Southern Connecticut State, St. Mary’s and fellow Sunshine State Conference opponent Barry round out the top five.

Another poll, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, has the Spartans ranked No. 5, behind Mount Olive, Central Missouri, Grand Valley State and defending national champion West Florida.

Tampa started its 2012 campaign with a pair of shutouts over Bentley (7-0, 8-0), before taking the final games of the series by a slimmer 2-1 margin. The Spartan pitching staff has yet to allow an earned run, with a total of nine pitchers taking the mound.

UT, who has won a total of five NCAA Division II national championships, has now been ranked in 114 consecutive polls, dating back to the 2005 season.

Head coach Joe Urso’s squad returns to the diamond on Friday as it will face Georgia College in a road contest at Milledgeville, Ga.
