Spartans Fall to SharksJanuary 14, 2012
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa (7-8) women’s basketball team fell 54-37 to SSC opponent Nova Southeastern University (10-4) on Saturday afternoon at the Bob Martinez Athletics Center.
It took four minutes for the first basket to be recorded, but junior Moriah Hodge hit a jumper to get things going. The first half featured four ties and one lead change. However, Nova ended the first half on a 13-0 run to take a 27-19 lead.
Jaleesa Harmon led the Spartans with seven points, while Moriah Hodge grabbed five boards in the first half.
The Sharks raised the tempo of the game as they were able to snag six fast break points. Both teams committed double digit turnovers (UT: 13, NSU: 15). However, the Sharks managed to capitalize off of the Spartan’s miscues turning them into 10 points.
Mexiandra Porter led the Sharks with 10 points with contributing Quinessa Johnson seven in the first half.
The Spartans were held to under 30 percent shooting from the field in the second half, and didn’t quite have an answer for the Sharks.
With 17:01 to go in the game, a Moriah Hodge free throw cut the Sharks lead to 6, which would be the closest the Spartans would get the rest of the afternoon.
Illyssa Vivo scored nine points in the half and finished with 12. Jaleesa Harmon finished with 10 points; while Hodge grabbed a team high 10 rebounds.
The Sharks led in double digits for the majority of the half forcing the Spartans to commit 18 turnovers. Nova’s bench had a presence in the game outscoring Tampa’s bench 11-5.
Porter led all scorers with 18 points and teammate Danielle Robinson contributed with 10, while Johnson grabbed 11 rebounds.
The Spartans will hit the hardwood again on Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m. against Florida Southern. The Moccasins lead the all-time series 51-30.
