Eckerd Shoots Past Tampa With Hot-Shooting Performance

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The University of Tampa (7-7, 1-4 SSC) fell to Eckerd College (8-4, 3-2 SSC) in a Sunshine State Conference women’s basketball contest from the McArthur Center by a score of 76-65.

Eckerd shot its way to a first half advantage, connecting on seven 3-pointers in the first 20-minutes of play. The Tritons closed out the half with three long-range shots in the final 1:39 of the half, taking a 40-27 lead to the break.

Moriah Hodge was one of four Spartans to play the entire half, and scored 10 first-half points along with eight rebounds, both team highs. Jaleesa Harmon tallied eight points in the first seven minutes of play before sitting out the remainder of the half due to foul trouble.

The Tritons would connect on four second-half 3-pointers to avoid a Spartan comeback as the long-range shooting by the Tritons proved to be the difference. Eckerd finished 11-for-20, or 55 percent, from beyond the arc.

Hodge recorded her second double-double of the season as the junior from Cincinnati, Ohio, had 22 points and 16 rebounds to lead UT in both categories. She also had a career-high in rebounds.

Harmon, who picked up her fifth foul with 4:45 to play, finished with 18 points in 21 minutes of action. Illyssa Vivo added 14 for Tampa along with a team-high four assists.

Aside from 3-pointers, the teams remained even in other areas, as UT outrebounded the Tritons 35-34. The Spartans also had a slight edge in field goal shooting at 45.3 to 45.1 percent.

The Spartans return home where it will host Nova Southeastern University on Saturday at the Bob Martinez Athletics Center. The game is slated for 2 p.m. Live stats and a webcast will be provided through tampaspartans.tv.
